Course Details

The Master of Laws program (LLM) is designed to expand your knowledge and deepen your understanding of a specialist area of law. All courses offered within the LLM program are developed for advanced study, contain a significant research component and focus on critical thinking and critical analysis of complex legal issues. This is a professionally-focused program that will expose students to new perspectives and deep analyses, ensuring high quality teaching and learning experiences. Graduates of the program will be equipped with advanced knowledge and skills, positioning them to engage in further education, research, and professional development in Australia and across the world. The program offers students the opportunity to complete one of five specialisations including Environmental Law, Employment and Labour Relations Law, Dispute Resolution, International Law and Law in Practice. The specialisation of Law in Practice is only available to students who completed their Law degree outside of Australia.

Qualification: Master Degree (By Coursework)

Course structure: 80 units of Directed courses (8 subjects worth 10 units each).

To obtain a specialisation, students must complete 4 courses (40 units) from one of the specialist areas and an additional 4 courses (40 units) either from their specialisation stream or other directed courses. Students who have a law degree that is not from a common law jurisdiction are required to complete Legal System of Australia as a core course. Law in Practice is tailored to practitioners who have completed their Law degree in a common law country other than Australia. By completing 40 units in the Law in Practice specialisation, practitioners may then have the opportunity to practice Law in Australia. New in 2018, this is a unique addition to the University of Newcastle postgraduate Law offering.
